Conjoined twins leave for Hungary tonight

The conjoined twins Rokeya and Rabeya will leave here for Hungary tonight for better treatment with the support of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim provided the air tickets to their parents at a press briefing held at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The twins along with their parents will stay in Hungary for three to four months where they will undergo primary surgeries required for their final separation. Later, the final surgery will take place at the institute in Bangladesh, Project Director of the burn institute Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad said.

The government will bear the entire cost of their treatment procedure, he said, adding the whole treatment procedure would be supervised by a German-based organisation.

A total of four people, including a doctor of DMCH named Hossain Imam, will accompany the twins.

“The parents of the twins, who are joined at the head, wanted them to be separated through surgery. They will undergo a series of operation.

“As per the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the hospital authorities are providing all necessary treatment to the twins,” Dr Azad said.

One Taslima Khatun, wife of Rafiqul Islam, of Atlanka village under Chatmohar upazila of Pabna, had given birth to the conjoined twins and now the couple wants them to be separated through surgery.
