Coal-laden cargo sinks in Sundarbans

A cargo MV Bilas carrying 775 tonnes of coal capsized in the Pashur river near the Sundarbans early Sunday.

The incident occurred when the cargo stuck in a hidden char at no-5 anchor near Harbaria area around 60 nautical miles away from the Mongla Port.

Lalon Haider, manager (operation) of a coal import company Sahara Enterprise, told newsmen that the cargo vessel MV Bilas capsized in the river after loading coal from a Liberian flag-bound ship MV Observatory on April 14.

A rescue ship of Mongla Port Authority (MPA) could not rescue the cargo after reaching the spot, he said.

"Any crew of the cargo was not injured," Lalon Haider said and claimed that there are no harmful situation would create after the incident.

Commander Md Waliullah, harbour master of Mongla Port Authority, said our rescue ship MV Shib Shah has reached the spot and rescued the staff from the capsized vessel.
