World Metrology Day today

FT ONLINE

World Metrology Day commemorating the anniversary of signature by representatives of seventeen nations of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 will be observed today in Bangladesh as elsewhere in the world.

The theme for World Metrology Day 2018 is "Constant Evolution of the International System of Units".

To mark the day, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has drawn up different programmes, including discussions, at its headquarters and regional offices.

Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast special discussion to mark the day. Key points and street islands in the capital city were decorated with banners, festoons and placards.

A discussion will be held at BSTI head office at Tejgaon at 3pm today. Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu will join it as the chief guest while Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan will be present as the special guest.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday issued separate messages on the eve of day and wished success of all programmes on this occasion.

They described this year's theme of the day "Constant Evolution of the International System of Units" as time-befitting and perfect.

They also highlighted the importance of metrology, the science of measurement, in scientific inventions, newer discoveries, international trade and commerce and to protest the global environment.

The 1875 Metre Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal application.

The original aim of the Metre Convention - the worldwide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

Metrology, the science of measurement, plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment.

Each year World Metrology Day is organized and celebrated jointly by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) with the participation of the national organizations responsible for metrology.
