28 killed in road accidents across the country

At least 28 people were killed in separate road accidents at Palashbari of Gaibandha, Sayel Shah of Rangpur, Natore, Sirajrganj and Gopalganj early Saturday.   

In Gaibandha, 16 people were killed and 30 others injured as a Thakurgaon-bound bus from Dhaka skidded off and fell into a roadside ditch at Gorurhati Bazar in Palashbari of in Gaibandha early Saturday.

The victims were passengers of the bus of Alam Enterprise but their identities could not be known immediately.

Sub-inspector Badal Mia of Palashbari police station told New Age that the accident took place near BRAC office of Gorurhati bazar at about 4:45am.

Fourteen of the passengers died on the spot and two other died at hospital, he said

The police officer said that the locals and police rushed the spot rescued the injured ones and sent them to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex from where seven were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

In Rangpur, seven people died under wheels of a truck at Shaleya Shah of Taraganj in Rangpur and injured four more early Saturday.

Highway police said people were returning their workplace from Dinajpur on a double-decker of BRTC and it got out of order at Shayel Shah area. The passengers were waiting on roadside getting off the bus as it was being repaired.

At that time, a speeding truck hit the parked double decker from behind and seven people died on the spot. The injured were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital police said.

In Sirajganj, two people died in bus-truck collision at Kalikapur of Raiganj of Sirajganj on Dhaka-Borga highway at around 6:30am.

The dead are identified as truck driver Shafiqul Islam, 35, of Salanga in Sirajganj and his assistant Rafiqul Islam, 25, of the same village.

Hatikumrul highway police sub-inspector M Ashraf Ali said a sand-laden truck collided head on with a bus of RK Paribahan while overtaking another vehicle. The truck driver and his assistant died on the spot and ten others sustained injuries, he said, reports the correspondent in Sirajganj.

Vehicular movement on the busy  highway was disrupted for an hour for the accident.

In Natore, two people were killed and three others injured when a sand-laden truck hit an easy-bike in Alaipur area of the district town around 7:00am, said Mohiuddin, station officer of Natore Fire Service.

The deceased were identified as Sulta Rani Debnath and Kanailal Debnath, residents of Sonapatil of Naldanga, reports United News of Bangladesh. The injured were admitted to Natore General Hospital.

In Gopalganj, two people died as a bus hit a number of rickshaws, rickshaw-van and threewheelers at Ghonaprar of Gopalganj.

Goplaganj police officer-in-charge   Monirul Islam told newsmen that a Goplaganj-bound local bus from Tungipara lost its control at Ghonapara bus stop and ran over a number of rickshaws, rickshaw-van and threewheelers. Two people died on the spot and 20 more sustained injuries, he said. Ten of the injured were admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital and others were released after first aid, he added.
