A court in Chattogram today sent BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury to jail after rejecting his bail petition in a case filed on charges of provoking the recent student movement for safe roads.

Metropolitan Session Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha passed the order after Khasru surrendered before the court as his anticipatory bail granted by the High Court expired today.

He also sought bail in the case, which was filed with Kotwali Police Station under the ICT and Special Powers Act on August 4, but the court sent him to jail.

On October 7, the HC extended Khasru’s bail till October 21 (today) asking him to surrender before the lower courts concerned on expiry of the bail terms.

Jakaria Dastagir, general secretary of Chattogram city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), filed the case against Amir Khasru on August 5 after a phone conversation allegedly between him and a BNP activist was leaked.

According to the case statement, Amir Khasru was attempting to create anarchy in the country during the nationwide student protests demanding safe roads.
