India vs England: Virat Kohli tops list of highest run-getters in 2018

FT ONLINE

Virat Kohli might have had a disappointing outing in the first innings of the Lord’s Test but his time at the crease saw him become the highest run-scorer across all formats so far in 2018.

Kohli, who scored 23 in the second Test before edging one behind off Chris Woakes, has scored 1404 runs thus far in the calender year, beating out England’s Jonny Bairstow, who’s scored 1389.

Another Indian batsman in Shikhar Dhawan also features in the top five. Dhawan, who performed poorly at Edgbaston and was subsequently dropped for the Lord’s Test, has scored 1055 runs.

In third place in the list is England skipper Joe Root, who scored 80 and 14 in the first Test vs India at Edgbaston and has amassed 1338 runs in 2018.

Fakhar Zaman, who became the first batsman from Pakistan to score a double ton in the fifth ODI of the ODI series against Zimbabwe, is fourth on the list with 1181 runs.

No other Indian features in the top 10 highest run-scorers for this year, although Rohit Sharma comes in at 11th having scored 841 runs.

Kohli had starred with the bat for India at Edgbaston, scoring 149 and 51 in the first and second innings, respectively. However, India went on to lose the match by 31 runs.

India are currently in a precarious position in the second Test at Lord’s, as James Anderson’s five-wicket haul saw them dismissed for 107 on Day 2 after rain washed out the first day.
