Maritime routesBody formed to police errant bulkheads

CHATTOGRAM: Several organisations are out to check irregularities on inland maritime routes and goods carriage by bulkheads and serial-less lighterage ships from mother vessels at outer anchorage of Chattogram seaport.

To this effect, an eight-member coordination committee was formed during a meeting on July 19. The panel has started functioning after Eid-ul-Azha.

The meeting was aimed at implementing the rules and regulations of Water Transport Cell (WTC).

AKM Shamsuzzaman Russel, president of Bangladesh Ship Handling and Berth Operators Association, heads the committee.

Other members are WTC co-convener Belayet Hossain, Inland Vessel Owners Association of Chittagong president Shafik Ahamed, Goods Agents Association president Sheikh Jahangir, WTC EC members Azizur Rahman, Jahangir Dovash and Pradip Chakraborti and WTC adviser Muhammed Tauhidul Anwar.

Earlier, Bangladesh Cargo Vessels Owners Association, Coastal Ship Owners Association of Bangladesh and WTC agreed to form a coordination committee.

Maritime Department of Bangladesh wrote to curb anomalies on inland maritime routes and goods carriage from mother vessels at outer anchorage of the seaport.

Two ship owners' bodies met Bangladesh Ship Handling and Berth Operators Association and formed the committee to restore the system on maritime routes and resist carrying goods by bulkheads and serial-less lighterage ships at outer anchorage.

However, the committee is taking action against illegal bulkhead vessels used for carrying goods from mother vessels and big ships, violating the maritime law.

It is also taking action against serial-less lighterage ships carrying goods on inland maritime routes.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority has informed maritime department of the matter.
