HC gives go-ahead to FBCCI polls

The High Court has cleared way for elections to the posts of President and two Vice-Presidents of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) slated for May 5.

A Division Bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed the order on Sunday.

The above order came following a petition filed by the election board of FBCCI which prayed for discharge of the rule.

On April 20, the HC issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why election to FBCCI shall not be halted considering Covid-19 pandemic.

Amir Uddin Dipu, a member of the General Body of the FBCCI, filed writ petition with the High Court questioning validity of the election process amid pandemic.

Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque, counsel for election board of FBCCI, said all 78 directors have been elected without polls as other candidates stood aside.

The HC discharged its rule on the ground that May 5 elections will be for the posts of President and Vice-President only and will see no crowd, he said.
