Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Nurul Islam on Saturday urged Bangladeshi expatriates to send remittances through proper channels and invest in the country.

"Bangladesh's economy largely depends on remittances... So, Bangladeshi expatriates should follow the legal ways to send their remittances to boost development process in the country," he told the inaugural function of World Conference Series: 2018 at a city hotel, an official release said in Dhaka.

Centre for Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) organized the conference titled "Aso Gori Matribhumi (Let us build motherland)".

Former minister SK Shahidul Islam, Executive Director of Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) Hossain Zillur Rahman, Secretary of Election Commission Secretariat Helal Uddin Ahmed and Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank Abu Hena Reza Hasan, among others, addressed the conference with Chairman of Centre for Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) MS Shakil Chowdhury in the chair.

Professionals from different organizations, officials, businessmen and NRBs, among others, were present at the conference.

Nurul said the government has ensured an easy process of sending migrant workers to foreign countries for increasing flow of remittances.

"We are working to formulate a migration-friendly system to ensure safety and security of overseas workers," he said, adding the government is taking different programmes to develop skilled workforce for ensuring access to better job markets, which eventually would increase flow of remittances.
