Commerce Minister Ahasanul Islam Titu saysOnion export ban from India won't affect Bangladesh market

Commerce Minister Ahasanul Islam Titu said that the cessation of onion exports from India would not affect the market in Bangladesh.

He made the statement hours after news broke of the Indian government's ban on onion exports to Bangladesh.

"Onions from India will be loaded onto the train by today (Saturday) or tomorrow. It will enter Bangladesh within the next three days. I am not aware of any problems regarding the arrival of onions from India," he said during a reception held for him and six Members of Parliament from Tangail at the Tangail Press Club.

The Commerce Minister said, "There is no need for any police or magistrate's vigilance in the market. I believe there is an adequate supply of goods in the market and the prices are also reasonable."

About the price hike of rice, he said, “Rice [price issue] falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Food. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to comment on matters related to another ministry.

Presided over by the President of Tangail Press Club Zafor Ahmed, former Agriculture Minister and the Awami League presidium member Abdur Razzaq was the chief guest at the event organized.
