Baira seeks Tk2,000cr assistance to face business losses
Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (Baira) sought Tk2,000 crore financial assistance from the government to overcome the business losses caused by the coronavirus catastrophe.
The organisation sought the assistance in a letter to prime minister Sheikh Hasina, signed by the Baira President Benjir Ahmed, MP.
The letter mentioned that around 70,000 workers go to different countries per month through manpower recruiting agencies.
"The labour market of Bangladesh has completely shut down now due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this situation, more than one lakh visas of aspirant migrant workers from different recruiting agencies have stuck in different stage," the letter reads.
"The owners of recruiting agencies are facing vast financial losses in such a situation. The situation becomes tougher for 1,600 recruiting agencies to bear the salaries of around 16,000 employees, office rent and other expenditure," Baira president said in the letter.
It added that the assistance of Tk2,000 crore is necessary to keep functioning the manpower recruiting sector in the current situation.
