One remanded over escape of 2 death-row convicts

A Dhaka court placed Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi on seven-day remand in a case lodged over recent escape of two death-row convicts from police custody at a Dhaka court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafi Uddin passed the order as police produced Mehedi before the court and pleaded to place him on 10-day remand in the case.

According to the case documents, Mehedi, also an alleged member of banned militant outfit Ansar-al Islam, directly took part in the militants' snatching mission on November 20. He is also an accused in blogger Nazimuddin Samad murder case.

Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit on November 23 arrested Mehedi from capital's Jatrabari area.

Death-row convicts Abu Siddiq Sohel and Moinul Hasan Shamim, members of banned militant outfit Ansar-al Islam, were whisked away by their associates by beating police and spraying some chemical on their eyes at Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court arena on November 20.
