FT ONLINE

Police yesterday detained one person in Tongi, Gazipur for his alleged involvement in selling masks and gloves that were discarded after use in hospitals.

The identity of the detainee could not be known at the time the report was filed. The detainee's accomplice, Nasir, is absconding.

Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Tongi East Police Station, confirmed the matter to reporters.

Quoting locals, the OC said a local named Nasir collected the used gloves and masks, including some bloodstained ones, after those were discarded from hospitals.

He, along with the detainee, then sold those at a high price after washing them with shampoo and ironing the masks at a shop in the area, the OC said, adding that locals informed police after they saw the masks being ironed at the shop.

Police later went to the spot and detained one person, while Nasir fled from the scene, he also said.

The law enforcers are trying to nab Nasir, he added.
