JS budget session begins June 10

The budget session of the 11th Parliament will begin on June 10 amid the coronavirus outbreak.

President Abdul Hamid today summoned the eighth session (budget) at the conference room of the National Parliament at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal is expected to present the budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year on June 11 at the parliament.

The eighth budget session of the Jatiya Sangsad will begin at 5pm with Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Budget for the next fiscal year will be challenging due to economic crisis caused by coronavirus. The International Monetary Fund said the global economy will contract by 3 percent this year as countries around the world shrink at the fastest pace in decades.

IMF described the global decline as the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The government has been imposing a shutdown since March 26 to prevent the spread of coronavirus and shut down all non-essential services, putting millions of people out of job. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced a series of stimulus packages to tackle the economic fallout of the virus outbreak.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. So far, the country has confirmed 23,870 cases and 349 deaths.
