COVID-19 deaths near 2,000, cases reach 159,679BD reports 29 deaths, 3,288 new cases


Bangladesh today confirmed 29 more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 3288 new cases of infection testing 14,727 samples in the last 24 hours.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 1,997 and the number of total infections stood at 159,679. 

"Among the dead patients, 21 were men and eight were women. Of them, 9 from Dhaka, seven from Rajshahi, four from Chattogram, three each from Khulna and Sylhet, two from Barishal, and one from Mymensingh division," Additional Director General of Health Directorate Professor Dr Nasima Sultana made the disclosure during a virtual briefing today.

Twenty-five patients died in different hospitals, one at his respective home and three were diagnosed with the infection after death.

According to the analysis of Covid-19 victims' age groups as of today, the highest number of patients - 43.52 percent - died till date were aged 60 and above. The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next with respectively 29.04 percent and 14.72 percent. Rest of the age groups stand under eight percent, such as- 31-40 with 7.41 percent, 21-30 with 3.51 percent, 11-20 with 1.20 percent and under ten with 0.60 percent.

The gender-wise analysis of the victims stated that some 1,587 people who have died from Covid-19 are male and 410 are female, which are 89.47% and 20.53% respectively.   

District-wise, out of 1,997 fatalities till date, 1,041 are from Dhaka division, 521 from Chattogram, 101 from Rajshahi, 84 from Sylhet, 82 from Khulna, 67 from Barishal, 53 from Rangpur and 48 from Mymensingh division.

Some 13,871 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 14,727 were tested in 64 labs across the country. So far 832,074 samples have been tested," she added.

Besides, 2,673 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 70,721.

Around 44.29 percent of novel coronavirus patients – both symptomatic and asymptomatic – have recovered in Bangladesh so far, while 1.25 percent have died. 

The latest day's infection rate was 22.33% of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 19.19%..

Currently, 64,150 people are quarantined across the country – including 2,242 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 309,995 people have completed their quarantine course.

Nasima Sultana said, "The authorities placed 744 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 16,449 after 13,674 left."

As many as 14,586,688 hotline health services were given by 16,414 trained and 4,217 volunteer doctors via three designated numbers, including 159,431 in the last 24-hour till 8am today. 

Till date, a total of 741,881 thermal screenings were conducted at different ports, including 1,092 at three international airports, 137 at seaports and 174 at land ports in the last 24 hours. 

As per the data provided by Central Medical Stores Depot (CMSD), no new personal protective equipment (PPE) were collected lately by the government, while PPEs left in store are 120,881.

Dr Nasima further added that the number of general beds dedicated to Covid-19 treatment in Dhaka city and countrywide are respectively 6,075 and 14,775, while the ICU beds count for 149 in Dhaka metropolitan and 401 in the whole country. There are 11,141 oxygen cylinders, 207 high-flow nasal cannula and 98 oxygen concentrator available across the country.

The virus has killed 529,388 people globally and infected 11,205,347 so far.
