Health budget needs to be boosted: Minister


Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Sunday said national health budget should be increased in a bid to ensure health services for the people.

“The size of annual budget for health sector is very small in our country. The investment along with budget will have to be increased in health sector to ensure health services for the people,” he said.

Zahid Maleque made the statement while speaking at a virtual programme, marking the golden jubilee of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on the day.

About second wave of the coronavirus infection in the country, he said the fresh surge of the virus infection has hit the country due to people’s negligence in health guidelines.

“The second wave of the coronavirus infection is now declining. If people again become callous to the health guidelines, the third wave may come in the country,” Zahid Maleque said.

Chaired by the director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the programme was addressed among others by health ministry’s health services division secretary Lokman Hossain Miah, medical education division secretary Md Ali Noor, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) president Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad president Dr Iqbal Arasalan.

Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the DGHS, presented the key-note speech at the programme.
