HC issues contempt rule against BERC chairman, energy secy


The High Court has issued a contempt of court rule against the Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) and the Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division for not complying with its order to set LPG prices through a public hearing.

A division bench comprising Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order on Sunday.

The contempt rule came following a petition filed by the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).

The HC asked the above officials to explain within two weeks as to why their non-compliance with the previous order shall not be held contemptuous.

The court fixed December 15 for the next hearing and order.

Appearing for petitioner, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said the officials concerned neither held public hearing nor submitted any report to the court despite expiry of three months.

On August 15, the HC directed the relevant authorities to set prices of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) through a public hearing and submit a report within 30 days.

The court passed the order acting on a writ petition filed by CAB in a 2016.
