Malls, shops to remain open amid virus lockdown

The government has permitted opening of shopping malls and other business establishments amid lockdown to facilitate sale of garment and other products ahead of the Eid.

The business activities came to a halt for lockdown imposed in the wake of growing corona cases across the country.

Leaders of shop owners’ association had a demand for permission to keep shopping malls and other business establishments open.

They were arguing that the havoc caused by corona would be double if business establishments and shopping malls remain closed.

Considering the demand, the Cabinet Division has issued a notification allowing shopping malls and other business establishments to be run following health regulations and social distance.

A circular, signed by Cabinet Division Deputy Secretary Md Rezaul Islam, has been issued in this regard on Thursday.

However, the permission is applicable for a period from April 9 to 13.

As per the order, the shopping malls and business establishments will be opened at 9 am and be closed at 5 pm.

The circular also mentioned that legal action will be taken if heath guidelines are not followed accordingly.

Earlier, the government lifted restrictions on public transport in city corporation areas from Wednesday, amid nationwide restrictions.

On Tuesday, several protests were held across Dhaka city for the third day by stakeholders of different sectors, demanding an end to the weeklong lockdown.
