Govt's integrated plan brings huge success in shipping sector: Humayun

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said on Thursday the government has been implementing different initiatives for the last 12 years to develop the country's shipping sector which has brought huge successes in the sector.

"The shipping sector is one of the most successful sectors of the present government. The sector has become an important sector like roads and railways. With the opening of closed waterways and the introduction of new routes, maritime networks have begun to develop across the country," he said.

The minister said this while speaking as the chief guest at a function organized by the Department of Shipping under the Ministry of Shipping on the occasion of 'World Maritime Day 2021' at a hotel in the city, said a press release.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Shipping Major (Retd) Rafiqul Islam Bir Uttam, among others, spoke on the occasion.

Shipping Secretary Mohammed Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury presided over the function.

In his speech, Humayun said various initiatives have also been taken to create skilled manpower for strengthening the shipping sector.

Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said the government has already taken several steps to develop the waterways and shipping system.

Necessary steps have also been taken to liberate all the rivers of the country and restore the navigability of the rivers, he added.

Despite various problems and limitations, he said, waterways are now much safer and more environment friendly than before.
