Flood victims to get rice, flour under special OMS for 3 months

The government will launch a special open market sale (OMS) programme for three months in the 14 flood-hit districts under Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, aiming to provide the affected people with rice and flour at subsidised rates.

Ismail Hossain, secretary to the food ministry, came up with the information while talking to reporters at a press briefing held over the food stock and the government’s assistance for the flood victims.

The special OMS will be provided at 230 centres in those affected districts and every day 230 tonnes of rice and 230 tonnes of flour will be sold from these centres.

A total of 14,490 tonnes of rice and 14,490 tonnes of flour will be sold under the special OMS programme in September, October, and November, he said.

Per kg rice will be sold at Tk30, flour at Tk24, and a packet of flour (each packet contains 2kg) at Tk55, he added.

The ministry will provide Tk90,68,18,682 as a subsidy for the special food programme.

Besides, the selling of rice and flour under the OMS programme in all district headquarters and municipalities in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, and Narsingdi districts will be underway.

Mentioning that there is no scarcity of food, the secretary said people do not need to worry about it.
