India-Bangladesh ties can't be evaluated by a single issue: Pranay Verma


Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has claimed that New Delhi is working with the Interim Government of Bangladesh, maintaining a strong relationship, saying that a single issue cannot define the overall relationship between the two countries.

Pranay Verma made the remarks while talking to reporters after emerging from a meeting held with Acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah at the foreign ministry office in Dhaka on Tuesday.

“India and Bangladesh maintain a multifaceted relationship. We have many issues to talk about. We can’t limit our relationship based on a single issue,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh to protest the attack that was carried out on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala on Monday.

“We are interested in increasing people-to-people ties of the two countries. India will work with Bangladesh, maintaining friendly relations, peace and security to ensure the prosperity of both sides,” he said.

Claiming that India is currently working together with the Bangladesh interim government, he said, “We will work in several sectors, including economy in the coming days. We ensured some positive developments in our mutual cooperation in the last two months.”

The Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala came under attack on Monday. The supporters of several organisations including Hindu Sangharsh Samity went on the attack on the pretext of torturing the people of Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs of India, in a statement, termed the incident sorrowful and said that diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances.

Besides, three sub-inspectors were suspended and a deputy superintendent of police was closed and instructed to report to the police headquarters for their alleged negligence

A suo-motu case was registered with the New Capital Complex (NCC) Police Station over the incident.

Seven persons have been arrested so far for their alleged involvement in the incident, according to news of some Indian news portals.
