Hunger Index 202411.9pc of population undernourished in BD

The Global Hunger Index 2024 has revealed that 11.9% of Bangladesh's population is currently experiencing undernutrition.

The report shows that Bangladesh outperforms India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan in terms of hunger, yet falls behind Nepal and Sri Lanka in the South Asian region.

The report, released on Wednesday at a hotel in the capital, also reveals that Bangladesh ranks 84th out of 127 countries with a score of 19.4. The analysis shows that the country is facing moderate hunger.

The Hunger Index score is based on four indicators: levels of undernutrition, underweight children under five, stunting (low height for age), and child mortality rates.

In Bangladesh, 11.9% of the population suffers from undernutrition. Among children under five, 23.6% are stunted, and 11.0% are wasted (having low weight for their height), and 2.9% of children die before reaching the age of five.

The report was unveiled during a joint event titled ‘Path to a Hunger-Free Bangladesh: Barriers and Solutions,’ organised by Welt Hunger Hilfe Bangladesh and Concern Worldwide.

Farida Akhter, Advisor to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, attended as the chief guest.
