Fire guts 50 shanties, jhut godowns in Narayanganj

The fire originated from a shanty of the slum beside Isdair bazar around 2:30am and soon spread, burning 50 structures including at least 15 jhut godowns inside the slum, said Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Narayanganj.

Informed by locals, seven firefighting units doused the blaze around 4:00am, our Narayanganj correspondent reports quoting the fire service official.

The fire might have been started from an electric short circuit or a mosquito coil, said the fire service official, adding that they will confirm the source of fire and the extent of losses after an investigation.

Mostak Ahmed, an affected jhut trader, said there were 15-20 jhut godowns in the slum and all were burnt to ashes.
