Two defamation cases filed against Sayeed Khokon

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), filed two cases with a Dhaka court on Monday against former DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon on allegations of defamation.

The lawsuits were filed in response to public allegations Khokon brought two days ago saying Taposh is not eligible for the post of mayor.

The plaintiff in one case is Kazi Anisur Rahman and Advocate Mohammad Sarwar Alam is in the other one.

Both the cases were filed in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury under section 500 of Bangladesh Penal Code.

On January 9, Sayeed Khokon said, “Taposh has embezzled hundreds of crore taka from DSCC fund and transferred it to his privately owned Modhumoti Bank. He also invested DSCC money to privately owned bodies and earned profit out of it.”

"Taposh has been very vocal against corruption since he took charge as the mayor. I would tell him, a big fish lecturing small fry on corruption is ironic," the former mayor added.

He also added that the mayor has lost his eligibility to hold the post as per Article 9 (2) (Ja) of the second chapter of the City Corporation Act 2009 because of such misconducts.

In reply, Fazle Noor Taposh on January 10 said Khokon's remarks on his fitness for the office was unimportant.

“It is his personal comment. It carries no importance,” he said.
