Ex Khulna-2 MP Mizanur Rahman gets 8 years in jail for graft
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Mizanur Rahman, former Member of Parliament for Khulna-2, to eight years in prison for amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
Judge Muhammad Abu Taher of Dhaka Special Judge Court-3 delivered the verdict after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defence.
Mir Ahmed Ali Salam, prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said the court found Mizanur guilty under two sections of the case, sentencing him to a total of eight years behind bars.
In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000. Failure to pay will result in an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also ordered the confiscation of Mizanur’s illegally acquired assets, valued at Tk 1,44,50,989.
According to the prosecution, ACC Director Md Manjur Morshed filed the case against Mizanur on August 6, 2019. Police later submitted a charge sheet on August 23, 2021.
