Bangladesh ascend to top of Super League


Bangladesh national cricket team moved to the top of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League by winning the second game of their three-match ODI series against visitors Sri Lanka Tuesday.

Hosts Bangladesh registered a 103-run victory (Duckworth/Lewis method) to bolster their standing in the Super League, and move to the top of the table with five wins in eight games yielding 50 points.

Bangladesh had moved to No 4 in the table with the 33-run win in the first game of the series.

Bangladesh in the Super League are now at the top, followed by England, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand.

The four teams have 40 points each but net run rate puts England in second spot, followed by Pakistan in third.

India are at No 8 on the table with three wins in six games and have 29 points.

Sri Lanka are struggling in the league being the 12th among 12 teams and yet to earn any point having played five games.

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League is a competition which is taking place across two years and will determine which teams qualify for the World Cup 2023 in India.

India, who are the hosts in 2023, and the other top seven teams will qualify automatically for the World Cup.

The bottom five teams will play a qualifying tournament, which will also feature the best teams from the lower rungs of competition.

Bangladesh with the series win have also broken the jinx against Sri Lanka.

The win is the Tigers’ maiden one against the island nation in eight series played.

Off the eight, two had finished in draw, while six were won by Sri Lanka.
