Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone of an underpass adjacent to Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College on the Airport Road in the capital on Sunday.

The prime minister is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of the underpass at Birsaptak Point at 10:00am on Sunday, sources at the Press Wing of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) informed.

According to government sources, the premier made a commitment to construct the underpass following the death of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College -- Dia Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib -- in a road crash on July 29.

Mim and Rajib were killed as a bus belonging to Jabal-e-Noor Paribhaban ploughed through a crowd while competing with another bus of the same company.

After the tragic accident, fellow students and guardians staged demonstrations across the country demanding road safety and exemplary punishment for the killers.

In the wake of students’ movement, the PMO on July 31 asked the authorities concerned to take measures against underage and unlicensed drivers of buses in Dhaka city.

During their movement, the students raised their nine-point demand, including capital punishment to reckless drivers. At that time, they also inspected documents of vehicles and driving licenses of drivers.

Even influentials, including ministers, lawmakers and law men failed to show valid documents to them during their inspection.

However, terming students’ movement logical, the government accepted their demands.

Earlier, the prime minister donated savings certificates amounting to Tk 20 lakh to each of the families of Mim and Rajib.

She also presented five buses to Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College for transportation of its students.
