Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus on Monday said that his government has undertaken initiatives to declare Sandwip as a seaport and to open Kumira-Guptachara ghat.
“We have decided to declare Sandwip a seaport, open the Kumira-Guptachara ghat, launch a Dhaka-Kumira bus service, build roads in the ferry ghat area, and carry out regular dredging of the waterway,” he said while addressing a public meeting in Chattogram.
Taking part in the programme virtually from the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, the Chief Adviser said that the long-standing suffering of Sandwip residents will end once these initiatives are implemented.
It is shameful for not building an effective transport system with Sandwip even after 50 years of the country's independence, he said.
He said that from now on, people of all ages, including children, the sick, and the elderly, will be able to travel to the Island safely.
Over the last 50 years, the inhabitants of the Sandwip have been facing an acute crisis of an effective transport system; however, no one has raised their voice to address the problem, he said.
