Govt revokes Faruque’s NSC councillorship

The National Sports Council (NSC) has revoked the appointment of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed as a government-nominated councillor, escalating the ongoing turmoil in the country's cricket administration.

In an official letter dated May 29, the NSC cited Section 13.2(b)(4) of its Act to justify the cancellation of Faruque’s position within the BCB. Although he remains the BCB President—an elected role—the move significantly undermines his authority and signals increasing government opposition.

The decision comes just a day after Faruque defied directives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to resign, stating that no valid reason had been provided for such a demand.

The crisis deepened earlier this week when several BCB directors brought a no-confidence motion against Faruque, accusing him of autocratic leadership and financial mismanagement.

The unfolding situation may attract the attention of the International Cricket Council (ICC), which maintains a firm stance against political interference in the governance of national cricket boards.

Meanwhile, former national captain Aminul Islam is reportedly being considered as a potential replacement should the BCB presidency become vacant in the coming months.
