In last week, a depression occurred and its influence of depression in the Bay of Bengal caused heavy rainfall and tidal surges in coastal areas of Bangladesh. As a result, many embankments’ points were breached by the tide surges, flooding hundreds of villages in Cox’s Bazar, Bhola, Patuakhali, Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts.
Total four people were reported died due to storm-related disasters caused in Bhola and Cox’s Bazar districts. In addition to the flooding, numerous houses have been damaged by the force of the tides.
In response to the ongoing disaster, COAST Foundation started urgent relief works for the affected community in Bhola and Cox’s Bazar district.
COAST initially allocated 5 Lakh taka from own fund to provide lifesaving assistance to the affected communities specially in Char (Island) areas adjacent to the Bay of Bengal.
Communication with mainland stopped with Saint Martin Island due to rough weather and people are suffering shortages of daily essentials there.
As per instructions of SK Ahsan Uddin, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Teknaf, COAST prepared food items for 100 families for Saint Martin union. However, due to unfavorable weather, it was not possible to go to Saint Martin's with relief supplies today. But COAST will move if the authority allow to go there with relief.
However, today, 200 affected families received relief assistance in Char Kalatali Union of Monpura Upazila. Each package contains 5 KG rice, 3 KG potatos, 1 KG lentils , 1 KG salt, 1 liter Soya bean oil.
Rashida Begum, Assistant Director of Bhola District of COAST Foundation, Khokon Chandra Shil, Project Coordinator, and Rajib Ghosh, Program Officer of CCR Project, along with other staff were present at the time.
It is to be noted that tomorrow, more 100 more affected families will be assisted in Chadpur Union of Tajumuddin Upazila.
In addition, a farmer died in a lightning at Hazariganj Union under Charfashion Upazila on May 29, 2025. Nur Alam (45) died in lightning and his two sons were injured and are currently at home after receiving primary treatment at a government hospital in Charfassion.
From COAST Foundation, Nur Alam's wife Sultana Begum received 10,000 taka grant. Sultana said that this money will help with the education expenses of her children. She does not have her own house.
She said that she did not receive any kind of assistance from anywhere other than the COAST Foundation so far. She has appeal for a widow's allowance from the government.
In disaster response, COAST Executive Director M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury is leading the response team and organized emergency meeting on 31 May 2025.
He said that its our responsibility to support the affected community during the disaster as we are accountable to them.
He also said that COAST is trying to manage more fund from donor to support the affected community as the need is still significant.
