Government secondary school teachers have suspended their ongoing work abstention, and annual examinations have resumed on Wednesday in over 700 schools.

Meanwhile, assistant teachers in government primary schools have launched a “complete shutdown” starting today. They locked school gates and held rallies and sit-ins in front of upazila education offices from 11am.

Abdus Salam, central coordinator of the Government Secondary Teachers’ Association (BASMASHIS), said on Tuesday night, “Our ongoing movement has been temporarily suspended. Annual exams will resume from Wednesday.”

Teacher leaders added that after the annual exams are completed, the government will be given a few days to meet their demands, after which secondary school teachers will resume their movement if necessary.

At the same time, primary teachers have faced show-cause notices from district education offices for allegedly obstructing annual exams. Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, convener of the Primary Teachers’ Demand Implementation Council, said, “We remain firm in pursuing our demands. Many of us have received show-cause notices.”

Assistant teachers have announced that the shutdown will continue until their demands are met. Their three main demands are:

Placement in the 11th-grade pay scale.

Resolution of complications regarding higher grade increments after 10 and 16 years of service.

100% departmental promotion from assistant teacher to head teacher.
