Retired Lieutenant General Sheikh Mamun Khaled, former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), has been arrested over a series of serious allegations, including corruption, abuse of power and misuse of state institutions.

He was arrested late on Wednesday (26 March) night from the DOHS residence in Mirpur of the capital.

Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Md. Shafiqul Islam said, "We have brought Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled to the DB office based on some specific allegations. We will talk to him on some issues. Detailed information on this matter will be provided later."

He is accused of involving the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) in political activities, as well as orchestrating so-called “militancy dramas” during his tenure.

Authorities have also brought allegations of large-scale financial irregularities against him, including the embezzlement of hundreds of crores of money from the Jolshiri Abashon project through corrupt practices.

In addition, he is alleged to have played a key role in establishing the controversial “Ayna Ghar” and to have amassed vast illegal wealth by exploiting his influence and connections, including the alleged misuse of power linked to Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Earlier, on 22 May last year, the court banned former DGFI Director General Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, his wife Nigar Sultana Khaled, Tax Commissioner Abu Sayeed Md. Mustaq, and former National Security Intelligence Agency (NSI) Director General Major General T. M. Jobayer's brother-in-law Khandaker Abul Qayyum from traveling abroad.

Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Ghalib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order following two separate applications from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
