Container carrying heavy logs falls onto trailer at Chattogram port
The accident damaged the crane, container and the trailer. However, no one was injured
A container loaded with heavy imported round logs fell onto a trailer, tearing off the lacing of quay gantry crane (QGC) spreader while being offloaded at Chattogram Port jetty on Saturday evening. However, no casualty was reported.
According to port sources, offloading operations from the Libarian-flagged vessel ‘CANG HAI’ were underway at Jetty No.3 of Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) using a QGC.
Suddenly, a 40-foot container fell onto the trailer kept at hook-point, tearing off the lacing of the QGC spreader around 8pm.
The accident damaged the crane, container and the trailer. However, no one was injured, said the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim.
“A special technical committee has been formed to investigate the cause behind the accident while efforts are already underway to remove the damaged container and equipment,” he said.
Operations at other facilities of the port are going on as usual, the secretary added.
