A former Swecchasebak Dal leader was stabbed to death by Jubo Dal activists during an arbitration meeting in the capital’s Mouchak area on Monday (8 June) night.

The victim was identified as Billal Hossain Talukder (57). He was the former convener of the Ramna thana unit and member of Dhaka Metropolitan (South) unit of Swecchasebak Dal, the volunteer wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The attack took place on Monday (June 8) night at around 8pm in the alley in front of Anarkali Market. Later, Billal's relatives rescued him in a life-threatening condition and he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead around 9:15pm.

The deceased, Billal, was the convener of the Ward 19 Swecchasebak Dal under Ramna Police Station. His father was late Yunus Talukder. He lived with his family in the Baganbari residential area of ​​Malibagh. He was a contractor by profession and had a sand-cement supplier business.

According to police, the incident occurred during a local arbitration (shalish) meeting held in the presence of top leaders of the Ramna thana unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-s two affiliate organizations, Jubo Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal; to resolve a prior altercation.

Several witnesses reported that Billal had an heated argument with Ramna Thana Jubo Dal convener Didarul Islam Babu and member secretary Md. Lutfur Rahman in that meeting. At one point, 'unknown 10-12' Jubo Dal activists led by Babu attacked him. At that time, the attackers stabbed in his chest. Billal immediately fell to the ground. Later, he was quickly rescued and taken to the hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.

Meanwhile, the victim’s nephew, who was present at the scene, alleged that the attack was carried out following a heated dispute involving local political activists. He claimed that the confrontation began earlier in the evening and later escalated into violence during the arbitration session.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp In-charge (Inspector) Md. Faruk said the body has been kept in the morgue. The attackers stabbed Billal on the right side of his chest. The incident has been reported to Ramna Police Station. Preparations are underway to take legal action in this regard.

Confirming the matter, Assistant Police Commissioner (AC) of DMP's Ramna Division, Mazahar said, "It is initially reported that Billal Hossain Talukder was stabbed during a match. The attackers fled immediately after the incident. Police are working to identify and arrest them."

Ramna Police Station sources said that today’s incident has created a huge stir in the area. Police patrols have been intensified in the area for overall security. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the real cause of the murder and identify those involved.

According to locals, there has been a long-standing dispute between several groups over the right to set up shops on the sidewalks in front of Mouchak and Anarkali markets. They believe that the murder may have been committed due to this conflict and past enmity.

The situation is currently tense in various areas of the capital, including Siddheshwari, Malibag, Mouchak and Baganbari, following the killing of the leader of the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal by followers of the Jubo Dal leader in the capital. 

Meanwhile, Didarul Islam Babu, the convener of Ramna Thana Jubo Dal and member of Dhaka Metropolitan South, who is the main accused in this sensational murder, has been expelled from the party. At the same time, the Ramna Thana Jubo Dal committee has been declared dissolved.

This information was given in a press release signed by Nurul Islam, Vice President (in charge of the office) of the Jubo Dal's Central Executive Committee, on Monday (June 8) night.

Police confirmed that the attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident, and operations are underway to arrest them.

The murder took place at a time when Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed lauded Bangladesh Police for low crime rate nationwide.

At a press conference held at the Secretariat on Monday, the minister said, “According to the data I have received, there has been a significant improvement in the crime situation compared to 2025. Crimes have decreased in almost every category.”
