Bangladesh Journalists Meet SAARC Secretary General in Kathmandu

During the discussion, the journalists stressed the importance of responsible and professional journalism in bridging gaps among the nations of the region

A delegation of Bangladeshi journalists representing the SAARC Journalist Forum paid a courtesy call on SAARC Secretary General Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu on Thursday.

The meeting focused on strengthening regional media cooperation, promoting press freedom and enhancing the role of journalists in advancing peace, economic development and cultural exchange among South Asian countries.

During the discussion, the journalists stressed the importance of responsible and professional journalism in bridging gaps among the nations of the region. They also highlighted shared challenges, including climate change, trade, business and sustainable socio-economic development, which require greater regional cooperation and public awareness.

The delegation underscored the need for stronger professional networks among journalists across SAARC member states, saying greater cross-border communication could contribute to mutual understanding and help address common regional concerns.

Ambassador Golam Sarwar expressed his commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at promoting peace, prosperity and the development of journalism for the welfare of the people of South Asia.

He also emphasized the importance of cross-border professional dialogue and institutional cooperation among journalists and media organizations in SAARC member states.

The SAARC Secretary General welcomed the delegation’s views and expressed hope that closer engagement between regional media professionals would contribute to greater understanding and cooperation across South Asia.

The delegation included Md Abdur Rahman, Secretary General of the SAARC Journalist Forum and Senior Correspondent of The Bangladesh Post; Mustaq Ahmed Mubaraqui, Editor of The Daily Bangabani; Md Ziaur Rahman, Special Correspondent of The Daily Ajkal; Mohammad Moniruzzaman, Editor of Daily Bank Bima Authority; and Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Senior Correspondent of Daily Ajker.

The meeting underscored the potential of the media to serve as a bridge among South Asian societies and strengthen regional dialogue at a time when the region faces a range of shared economic, environmental and social challenges.
