Onion import from India has resumed in Bangladesh after a closure of two months. And for the first time, onions have been imported through the railways.
An onion-laden train arrived in Bangladesh on Thursday morning. It reached the Hili Rail Station at noon where the unloading process started.
Raihan Traders of Hili imported the onions from Nashik and Vellore in India.
"Raihan Traders imported 1,600 tonnes of onion using 42 wagons," said Tapan Kumar Chakroborty, station master of Hili Railway Station.
The imported onions will be unloaded in two days and the wagons will be sent back to India through Darshana, he added.
"We have imported onions at Tk21 per kilogram from Nashik and Vellore in India, and these will be sold for Tk23 to Tk25 in the wholesale markets of Hili," said Shahidul Islam, proprietor of Raihan Traders.
The onions will be supplied to different regions including Dhaka and Chattogram, he added.
He thinks that the price of onions will drop in retail markets as onion import has resumed.
The workers involved in loading and unloading are happy now as the land port has become operational again and they have got back their jobs back.
