The number of confirmed coronavirus patients in Bangladesh surged to 87,520 on Sunday as the country registered 3,141 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.
Besides, 32 more people died from COVID-19 during the period. With the latest, the death toll from the lethal disease now stands at 1,171.
Nasima Sultana, additional director general (admin) at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), disclosed the information while briefing the media live on the daily COVID-19 bulletin at 2:30pm.
Besides, the recovery count also jumped to 18,730 after 903 patients were discharged from hospitals during the period under review.
Bangladesh on Saturday overtook China-- where the disease was first reported in December last-- in terms of the number of coronavirus cases to emerge as the world’s 18th largest outbreak.
The densely populated nation of around 170 million first confirmed its coronavirus cases and deaths in March and since March 26 enforced a 66-day shutdown in parallel with its general holidays in a bid to slow the coronavirus spread.
As the number of cases continued to increase even during those days of shutdown, the target of slowing the spread, much less of flattening the curve, remained unachieved.
Now, amid a spike in coronavirus cases since May 31, when the government eased its lockdown, health experts and economists are calling for imposing a hard lockdown.
A hard lockdown is a must to avert large-scale coronavirus community transmission as well as flatten the curve, they say.
Globally, 7,884,772 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 432,638 people died as of Sunday noon, according to the worldometer.
Of them, 3,402,366 are currently being treated with 54,132 remain in serious or critical condition.
So far, 4,049,768 people have recovered.
