The widespread speculation that the Narayanganj mosque explosion was caused by gas leaking from an underground pipeline has been found to be true.

Investigators from the Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited found two leakages on the gas pipeline on Monday in the ground that runs four feet deep underneath the three-storey structure.

After five hours of digging, the Titas Gas authority spotted the leakages on a 0.75-inch gas pipeline, according to Mofizul Islam, deputy general manager of Titas.

An inspection team from the organization also visited the spot soon after the discovery of the leakage.

However, the team said it would not reveal any details about the incident until its investigation had been completed.

When contacted, DGM Mofizul said it was not yet confirmed if the leakages on the pipeline were active and had caused the explosion.

He said: “We are still digging the place for further clarity on the matter. ”

At least 18 people have spontaneously recorded their testimony regarding the fatal mosque blast in Narayanganj before the probe body formed by the district administration.

The public hearing that took place from 10 am to 5 pm at the Deputy Commissioner’s office will consider any important information from anyone who can provide it and will use it as evidence in the investigation.

Additional District Magistrate Khadiza Tahira, chief of the probe body, confirmed the matter.
