A massive gunfight between a terrorist group and members of the police and Border Guard Bangladesh at three spots of Thanchi upazila Bazar under Bandarban district was reported on Thursday night.
Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Mamun said that the gunfight ensued at Tahnchi Bazar, near the Police Station and Hospital around 8:45 pm.
However, he couldn’t specify about the terrorist group instantly.
Since the incident, there is panic among the locals in the area. However, no casualty was immediately reported.
Talking to journalist at about 10:00 pm, Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Mamun said that a group of terrorist came to the market around 8:30 pm and started firing. They then opened fire at the police. Police and BGB opened fire in retaliation.
Mohammad Mamun said, "I have been told by the law enforcers that 400 to 500 bullets were fired."
The shelling stopped around 10 pm, said the UNO, adding that the terrorists could be anywhere in the area. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across the town.
