Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has termed the arrest of actor Nusraat Faria “an embarrassing incident” for the government.
In a Facebook post made earlier on Monday, Farooki expressed concern over the arrest.
Actress Nusraat Faria was arrested on Sunday from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while she was en route to Thailand.
Immigration police detained her based on an arrest warrant issued in connection with a case filed at Bhatara Police Station.
The case accuses Faria of attempted murder during the July uprising. Following her arrest, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka ordered her to be sent to jail on Monday.
Reacting to the incident, Farooki took to Facebook at 11:12 am on Monday to share his views.
Farooki further noted that the case against Faria had existed for some time, and that, to his knowledge, there had been no effort by the government to arrest her prior to the completion of the investigation.
“But this incident occurred immediately after she arrived at the airport,” he said. “Perhaps this happened due to over-nervousness following the public outrage regarding former Awami League president Abdul Hamid’s departure abroad.”
He also referenced a recent similar incident involving the wife of Barrister Andalib Partha and stressed that such actions are “in no way acceptable.”
“I believe Faria will receive legal remedy,” Farooki added. “And I hope we will be able to handle such indiscriminate lawsuits more sensitively. We must remember that our primary task is to ensure justice for the real perpetrators of July.”
