Mezbaul Haque, an Executive Director of Bangladesh Bank, has resigned from his position.

According to central bank sources, he submitted his resignation on Tuesday, citing personal reasons.

Following the mass uprising on 5 August last year, which led to the fall of the Awami League government, Bangladesh Bank began a series of personnel changes.

In the first phase, the governor, two deputy governors, the head of BFIU, and the governor’s policy adviser—who were all contract-based officials—were asked to resign. Mezbaul Haque’s resignation marks the first instance of a regular officer stepping down.

Mezbaul Haque had long held responsibilities in key departments of the central bank, including payment systems, IT and offsite supervision. In December 2022, he was appointed Executive Director and Spokesperson.

During his tenure, he faced allegations of irregularities and bias. Notably, in 2016, his name surfaced in connection with the Bangladesh Bank reserve theft, when reports alleged that he had allowed officials from a foreign institution access to the IT room, raising questions about the transparency of the investigation.

He was also considered influential in the circles of the Awami League government and was known as a close associate of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy. However, following the government’s fall, the situation changed, and he was transferred from the central Dhaka office to Rajshahi.
