A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered Md Kamal Hossain, a senior assistant secretary (Officer on Special Duty) at the Ministry of Public Administration, to be sent to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of forging freedom fighter documents.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order after cancelling his bail, ACC prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi said.
He said the accused, Kamal Hossain, obtained four weeks’ anticipatory bail from the High Court on 15 December last year. He later surrendered before the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court on 23 December and sought bail.
On that day, the court granted him bail on the condition that he cooperate with the investigation, including undergoing a DNA test, and fixed a date for a bail hearing subject to the DNA test report, he added.
However, an application was filed seeking cancellation of his bail as the accused failed to comply with the bail conditions on two occasions. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.
According to the case documents, the accused allegedly used his paternal uncle, freedom fighter Md Ahsan Habib and aunt Mst Sanowara Khatun as his parents instead of his biological father Md Abul Kashem and mother Mst Habia Khatun, to gain admission to educational institutions and secure employment under the freedom fighter quota.
He took part in the 35th BCS examination and allegedly secured a post in the administration cadre showing himself as a freedom fighter’s child, which the ACC termed a gross betrayal of the spirit of the Liberation War. ACC Deputy Assistant Director Md Manjurul Islam Mintu filed the case on 26 December.
