National Citizen's Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain issued a stern warning to the BNP-led government on Sunday, April 5, 2026, stating that the NCP would declare the current administration "illegal" if the referendum mandate is ignored.
During a press conference at the party’s central office, Mahmud accused the government of harboring autocratic tendencies and violating the constitution by appointing "administrators" to local government bodies instead of elected representatives.
He drew historical parallels, warning that if the spirit of the 2024 mass uprising is compromised, the country could witness another revolution by 2026 or 2027.
Emphasizing that the NCP had initially intended to cooperate, he concluded that the government's recent actions regarding the cancellation of reform ordinances have left the opposition with no choice but to take to the streets.
