Prior to the premier one-day cricket tournament, a Twenty20 cricket tournament was held with only local players and Sheikh Jamal clinched the trophy of the first such tournament by winning the final on Monday.

Abahani, the powerhouse of local sports, were eliminated from the group stage in the Twenty20 tournament but the Dhanmondi-based side, which won two of the last two leagues, will be keen to make a good start against newly promoted Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishan (BKSP) at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.

Another newly promoted side Uttara Sporting Club will play their first match in the inaugural day as they will face Twenty20 champion Sheikh Jamal, who finished third in last year’s DPL, at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah.

Last year’s runners-up Legends of Rupganj will start their campaign in the same day as they will take on Brothers Union at BKSP-3 ground at Savar. The Gopibag-based side barely survived in the top flight as they finished over two relegated sides Agrani Bank Limited and Kalabagan Krira Chakra in the last season.

On Saturday, six other sides of the 12-team tournament will take the field as Prime Doleshwar will face Shinepukur Cricket Club at Fatullah, Khelaghar Samaj Kallayan Samity will take on Prime Bank Cricket Club at Mirpur and Gazi Group Cricketers will lock horns with Mohammedan Sporting Club at BKSP.
