The death toll from the dreaded Covid-19 has crossed 5,000-mark in Bangladesh, with newly reported 28 deaths in the last 24 hours till Tuesday 8am.

The death toll now stands at 5,007, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the 24-hour period, 1,557 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the infection tally to 352,178.

The death rate was 1.42%, while latest daily infection rate was 10.99% and the overall rate stood at 19.05%.

A total 14,164 samples have been tested in 102 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. So far 1,848,487 samples have been tested overall.

Among the deceased patients, 17 were men and 11 were women. Moreover, 18 of them hailed from Dhaka, four from Chattogram, three from Khulna and one each from Rajshahi, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.

All of them died in different hospitals in the country. 

Besides, 2,073 patients were declared free of the novel coronavirus in the 24-hour period. The total number of recoveries has reached 2,60,790 while the recovery rate is 74.05%.

Bangladesh reported its first three Covid-19 infections on March 8 and first death on March 18. It took just 198 days to cross the 5,000-mark of deaths from the virus infection.
