The government has built embankments in the north-eastern haor areas to protect crops from untimely flood this year as heavy flooding in the region caused severe damage to crops and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes last year.
"This year, we have attached the highest importance to building embankments in the haor areas to protect crops from untimely flood," Water Resources Minister Anwar Hossain Manju told a view-exchange meeting at the local circuit house in Sunamganj on Wednesday.
State Minister for Water Resources Lieutenant Colonel (Retd) Muhammad Nazrul Islam, lawmaker Samsunnahar Begum Sahana and Additional Secretary Yusuf Hossain, among others, addressed the meeting with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sabirul Islam in the chair.
The minister urged the administration to remain alert so that the maintenance of the embankments can be ensured properly.
Terming the incumbent government as an agriculture friendly one, Manju said the country has attained self-sufficiency in food production because of the government's sincere efforts for the progress of the sector.
