Awami League (AL) nominated candidate Md Mahmud Hasan Ripon won the by-polls to Gaibandha-5 (Phulchari-Saghata) constituency held on Wednesday.

As per the unofficial result announced by Returning Officer (RO) Md Faridul Islam, Mahmud bagged 82,813 votes to defeat his nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate HM Golam Shahid Ronju who secured 45,761 votes.

The returning officer declared the result after obtaining results from 145 centres on Wednesday.

The voting of Gaibandha-5 by-polls began at 8:30 am and ended at 4:30 pm.

Without any break, the votting took place using electronic voting machine (EVM) in 145 centres. To observe the voting centres, 1,242 CCTV cameras were installed.
