The workers of the ready-made garment (RMG) will get a 9% annual increment in their wages.
This increment will be effective from 1 December 2024 and will be reflected in the wages of January 2025.
On Monday, the decision was made following a recommendation of a tripartite committee – comprising factory owners, workers, and the government – formed to settle various issues related to the apparel sector.
The committee held its fifth meeting where representatives from labour and manufacturers unanimously agreed to the recommendation and signed the decision today.
In the meeting, labour representatives proposed a 10% annual increment hike, emphasising the rising costs of living, whereas the representatives of manufacturers proposed an 8% increase owing to the industry’s limitations.
After a long discussion, the committee recommended the existing 5% annual pay increment will be increased by an additional 4%, totalling 9%.
The increment will be subject to relevant provisions of the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006 (as amended). The 5% annual pay increment fixed by the Minimum Wage Board, will remain in place.
