The Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) and the Fire Service and Civil Defence held a joint press briefing around 10:10pm on Saturday regarding the devastating fire at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s cargo complex.

Flight Lieutenant Abu Wakkas Ridoy from the BAF Aviation Security Department said, “Passengers who were waiting inside the airport for their flights have been provided with food. We hope that all flight operations will resume within the next 30 minutes to one hour.”

FSCD Director General Muhammad Jahed Kamal said, “A total of 37 units were deployed in the operation. Although the fire is under control, it has not been completely extinguished yet. Our teams will continue working until the fire is fully doused. Domestic and international flights have already resumed. So far, two of our firefighters have been injured.”

He added, “The affected area spans about 400 by 400 yards. Personnel from the Army, Air Force, Navy, Police and Ansar have worked alongside our teams.”

Highlighting challenges faced during the operation, he said, “Strong winds caused the flames and smoke to spread rapidly. The small partitioned sections inside the building also made it difficult to reach certain areas.”

When asked about the presence of chemicals, he said, “We cannot confirm it yet, but some flames suggest that chemicals might be present.”

Wing Commander Muntasir of the Provost Marshal Directorate, Air Force Headquarters, said, “Nine fire units from the Air Force were deployed along with two ambulances, a fire vehicle, and a crash tanker. So far, one Air Force firefighter has been injured and is currently receiving treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.”
