Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has called on all competing candidates to rise above personal or party interests and give priority to the greater interest of the nation, regardless of the election outcome.

In a televised address to the nation on Tuesday evening, two days before polling, he urged all sides to place the country’s interests above partisan considerations.

“Victory, like defeat, is an integral part of democracy. After the election, dedicate yourselves to building a new, just, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh together,” he urged the aspirants.

The chief adviser also called on political parties to instruct their activists to refrain from any kind of violence, intimidation, occupying polling centres, influencing voters, or provocative activities.

“Rest assured, the interim government will complete its duties by transferring power to the winning representatives at the earliest opportunity,” he said.

Encouraging citizens to vote in a spirit of confidence, he urged people to go to polling stations with their families and take part peacefully.

“Cast your precious vote and open the door to a new Bangladesh. The key to the country is in your hands. Use it wisely,” he said, ending with a prayer for guidance.

The general election is scheduled for Thursday in a markedly changed political landscape following last year’s July Uprising.

Voters will also take part in a referendum on proposed amendments to the July Charter on the same day.

Yunus, a Nobel laureate, delivered the address at 7pm. He assumed office as head of the interim government in August 2024 after the fall of the Awami League administration.
